During the school year, all international F1 students at ILTexas have the option to live on-campus in the student apartments or to live off-campus with a host family. The apartments are closed over summer break.
Students are housed in apartment-style dormitories, complete with wifi, kitchen, dining room, living room, three bedrooms, and two bathrooms in each apartment unit. Each bedroom houses two students for a total of six students in each apartment. Kitchens are outfitted with a refrigerator and microwave, but no oven or stove for safety reasons. If students so desire, they may purchase their own counter-top burners, rice cookers, and/or electric kettles.
The apartment complex is divided into boys’ and girls’ dormitory buildings. Male and female students are not allowed into apartments of the opposite sex but can convene in the Welcome Center. The Welcome Center is the main gathering area in the dorms. It is furnished with couches, big screen TVs, a foosball table, a ping-pong table, a pool table, and board games for students to enjoy. Adjacent to the Welcome Center are the boys’ and girls’ laundry rooms. Washers and dryers are available for the students to use free of charge.
Students are responsible for cleaning their own apartments, and dorm inspections are made weekly by dorm administrators and staff.
Our Director of International Students and Resident Advisors (RAs) live in the dorms and are there to assist the students with anything from schoolwork to a doctor’s visit.
The on-campus student apartments are located in a very safe area. To further improve the safety of our students, entry into the complex requires a key card, and a security guard is on duty 24/7 any time the students are at the dorms. The dormitory complex is also equipped with almost 50 security cameras.
Students are allowed to leave campus in groups of 2 or more with permission from the Resident Advisor (RA) on duty. The area around the apartments is very convenient. There is a Tom Thumb grocery store, a Chase Bank, and a Starbucks located directly across the street.
All meals are provided for international students, and the cost is included in tuition and fees for boarding school students. Professional chefs are hired to prepare all meals for our international students. Our chefs prepare a variety of dishes—from local Texas cuisine to authentic Chinese (cooked by a Chinese chef). Meals not provided by our cafeteria or chefs are usually ordered in from restaurants in the area. Any food allergies or restrictions should be communicated to the Director of International Students so that our chefs can make accommodations.
*Should students choose to eat something other than what is provided, they are responsible for purchasing and paying for the food themselves.
The International Leadership of Texas fosters a community of support, friendship, and caring. One of the ways that we do this is through our Mentor Program. The Mentor Program pairs a local student with an international student so that they have a friend to study with, learn American culture from, and share experiences with. Mentors maintain close, friendly contact with the international students, making them feel comfortable while gaining an understanding of their many new experiences at the International Leadership of Texas.
Mentor relationships are rooted in events that allow for the international students to experience American culture with their mentor. Some mentor events include NBA basketball games, amusement parks, and bowling.
In addition, we take our students to different cities across the United States to learn, look at top universities, and have unique experiences every year. Past trips have included excursions to San Francisco, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., various cities throughout Texas, and Orlando.
Once a year, our annual road scholar trip gives ILTexas students opportunities to visit famous universities and museums. In the past, we've been to San Francisco, Boston, New York City, DC, LA, Orlando, and some big Texas cities (Austin, San Antonio, Corpus Christi)
